“Everyone is having fun either getting great deals or turning their old junk into fast cash”

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013 by

The Seattle Bike Swap is coming upon Sunday, Feb. 10. If you’re in the market for a used or new bike, equipment or accessories at bargain prices, you won’t want to miss the Swap!

Now in its 18th year, the Seattle Bike Swap is a bike bargain hunter’s paradise with up to 172 vendors under the same roof. Buyers will find great deals on new and used bike-related goods, from complete bikes to small parts. You never know exactly what vendors will bring to sell and what treasures you might find.

“The idea of the Bike Swap, or a big bike garage sale, came from Jerry Baker who was holding one each year in a gym in Wallingford,” recalled Dave Douglas.“The event was mainly attended by a hundred or so bike racers trying to sell their old stuff. I thought it would be a much better event if we could get it out to the masses and pass on some great deals to everyone.”

Douglas started the Seattle Bike Swap in 1996, hosting 52 vendors in the Northwest rooms of the Seattle Center.

The Swap quickly grew and in 2005, the event moved to Hanger 30 in Magnuson Park to make room for over 100 vendors. Since 2011, the Swap has been held at Seattle Center Expo Hall which allowed it to grow to 172 vendor spots.

“Every year we have sold out of vendor spots and we average about 2,200 attendees,” revealed Douglas.

Attendees range from new commuters to bike racers and collectors, all looking to benefit from the Swap’s unbeatable prices.

The Swap has traditionally offered fantastic deals on bike gear because bike racers would get their equipment and clothing at a big discount so when they went to sell it, they were not looking for top dollar – just some dollars, said Douglas.

Plus, anyone with a surplus of road, mountain or track bike stuff (components, frames, clothing or complete bikes) can rent a sellers’ space at the Seattle Bike Swap.

“Lots of crazy stuff has been bought and sold at the bike swap – you get lots of used, top-of-the line team clothing: jerseys that cost $80 new that have been worn one season go for $5 to $10,” said Douglas, adding that he once scored a new set of Shimano low end wheels –for training –with a 10 speed cassette, tubes and tires for just $100.

Another big draw is the offerings of vintage bikes and parts.

“There is the hard to find retro equipment that have been in a drawer for 20 years that is now cool again,” said Douglas. “What was junk is turned into cash – lots of fun.”

Don’t know anything about bikes? There will be plenty of ready-to-ride bikes priced to sell.

“For me it is one of the best events of the year,” said Douglas. “Everyone is having fun either getting great deals or turning their old junk into fast cash.”

Whether you’re interested in selling or buying, the Seattle Bike Swap is the place to be!

Look out for the Bicycle Ambassadors this Week!

Thursday, May 10th, 2012 by

Cascade’s Bicycle Ambassadors are gearing up for a busy spring and summer.  Our Bicycle Ambassadors are part of Cascade’s outreach team and attend all kinds of events from Transportation Fairs at businesses, health nights at local schools, and Energizer stations along trails and popular bike routes. The Ambassadors are all prepared to answer your route-finding questions, provide the latest updates on bike news, or just pump up your tires.  During the month of May, they will also be handing out prizes at special Bike Month Energizer stations all around Seattle and the surrounding areas. Look out for their colorful tablecloth and smiling faces at the following events this week:

May 10: Bike Month Energizer Station: Interlaken

May 10: Lawton Elementary Health and Fitness Day

May 13: Bicycle Sunday, Seward Park

Even though only a few of us can be “official” Cascade Bicycle Ambassadors, everyone can  serve as an ambassador for bike riders on a daily basis.  We all know Bike Month is a great time to ride your bike, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to set an example on two-wheels.   With trails and bike lanes getting more crowded, don’t forget those little courtesies that make everyone’s commute that much better.  Using hand signals, alerting people when you are passing, and yielding to pedestrians are all simple tasks, yet they send a hugely important message that bicyclists are responsible and respectful users of the road (this might seem obvious to you, but there are definitely still those that need convincing).  Plus, these small gestures keep us ALL safer and happier!  It’s amazing how much appreciation you will receive from taking these actions.  Let’s all be safe and happy out there this May, and beyond.

Annual kids’ bike swap on Saturday

Thursday, May 5th, 2011 by

Looking for a bike for your kids? Our friends at Bike Works are hosting their 15th annual Kids’ Bike Swap on Saturday. Check it out!

Saturday, May 7
10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Genesee Playfield (43rd Ave S and S Genesee St).

This annual event is an opportunity for families to trade in a bike their child has outgrown for a larger bike – just in time for the summer riding season! The Kid’s Bike Swap helps to facilitate the flow of affordable bicycles within the community and keeps fully functional bikes out of our local landfills. This year, Bike Works has overhauled over 145 kids’ bikes to kick-off the swap!

How it works:

At the swap, each bike that is brought to be swapped is assigned a trade value, which can then be applied towards a “new” bike. If the chosen bike’s value exceeds that of the trade value the “customer” is responsible for the difference. Typically, when a bike is exchanged, the “customer” is able to take home a newly recycled ride for $12 or less.

Families looking to buy a bike, who do not have a bike to trade in, are welcome to come after 12 pm.

Seattle Children’s will fit free bike helmets and provide education on bicycle helmet safety. There will also be a “Family Bike” expo, with examples of different bikes and trailers that allow families to be car free.

Major Taylor runs a successful consignment area

Monday, February 28th, 2011 by

Almost two weeks ago Ed and I, along with eight students in the Major Taylor program put on brave faces for what we expected to be a crazy day running the bike consignment area at the Seattle Bike Swap. We had never done it before, but jumped at the idea that we could turn this aspect of swap into a fundraiser for the Major Taylor Project.

I was told that in the past it was never a very large section of swap, maybe having around 30 bikes, but that I should expect no more than 50 bikes to manage and sell. At 6:30 a.m. the first four bikes were turned in, and we were ready to go. By 7:30 a.m. I had run out of the premade tags (numbers only ran up to 50) and was making new numbers on my recycled-bicycle-paper-notepad.  By 8 a.m. we ran out of our allotted space (the whole front room in the exhibition hall!) and had to set up new racks for the bikes in the main aisle. At 9 a.m. exactly deal-hunters started coming through the section to evaluate the 81 bikes that we had set up for viewing. This is where the help of the Major Taylor teens proved invaluable. They haggled with customers, using the main selling point that 10% of the sale price went to the Major Taylor Project, allowing more kids to get out on bikes and experience the freedom a bike has to offer.

The teens did a far better job bargaining with the deal hunters than I would have. I was the last line of defense and had a team of dedicated students helping me run the money side of the affair. Even though we had to give away 90% of the sale price, the teens helped us raise an impressive $3,600, making the organizational efforts well worth our time, and as an added bonus, the Major Taylor students got to see the Seattle Center (many of them had not had the opportunity beforehand).

If you missed the opportunity to let someone else sell your bike for you and support the cause, don’t fret because the Major Taylor Project will be back at the next swap, streamlined and ready for your business.
