Bring a friend on F5 Bike To Work Day this Friday, May 18

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 by

F5 Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 18, and Cascade has planned a full program of events designed to support and celebrate bicycling as transportation. Whether you’ll be riding for the first time or the 3,000th, there is absolutely no better day to commute by bike than this Friday. Invite a friend and join us!

The off-the-charts good times begin early with more than 60 commute stations from 6-9 a.m., where bike-friendly local organizations and bike shops will be greeting riders and handing out goodies.

Get jazzed at KEXP radio station with a live outdoor  broadcast followed by a 7:45 a.m. ride with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and other elected officials to the Rally at Seattle City Hall.

After work, stop by the Ballard Street Party from 4-7 p.m. in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood and enjoy live music, bike polo, test rides and more.

New this year, MOHAI will be displaying an antique penny-farthing bicycle, Theo Chocolates will be sampling their new World Bicycle Relief Bars, and we’ll be inviting you to strut your stuff in our new “Share Your Style” Bike Fashion Show. You can also rest your tired legs and tour the Ballard rain gardens and Ballard’s proposed Greenway with the fine folks at Seattle Pedi-Cab.

Here’s the full schedule:

You know why you ride–for your health, for your wallet, for the environment, or for the simple joy of getting around on two wheels–so why not grab a friend or co-worker to join in on the fun?

Check our fun-filled schedule of events, bring a friend, and let’s ride!

“Share Your Style” Bike Fashion Show

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 by

 What’s your bike style?

Copenhagen chic?
Performance or safety oriented?
Skinny jeans?
Avant-garde?

Whatever it is (okay, maybe save the body paint for the Fremont Fair), you’re invited to come show it off at our new “Share Your Style” Bike Fashion Show at the Ballard Street Party on May 18.

This is a non-competitive, open-to-anyone, fun opportunity to share what bike style means to you. You’ll also get to answer fun questions, like “what’s in your pannier?” and “what’s your number one bike fashion tip?” Everyone who participates will receive great prizes from our sponsors.

You can sign up in advance online, or at the event from 6:15-6:30 p.m. alongside the KEXP main stage.

Have a especially fashionable rider on your Group Health Commute Challenge team? Nominate them by sending their name and email to annat@cascadebicycleclub.org. We’ll reach out and encourage them to come strut their stuff.

Too shy to get up on stage? You can still come and enjoy the show!

Celebrate Bike Month by giving BIG

Monday, April 30th, 2012 by

It’s Bike Month — and what better way to celebrate than by supporting Cascade’s efforts to transform the Puget Sound community into a community that bicycles?

On Wednesday, May 2, the Seattle Foundation is hosting its second annual GiveBIG Day, a community-wide giving challenge and a great opportunity for local nonprofits to stretch their fundraising dollars. For every dollar raised for Cascade’s Education Foundation on May 2, we’ll receive a proportional match from the Seattle Foundation. We hope you’ll consider donating to Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation on GiveBIG Day.

Need a good reason to give? Here are three:

Let’s do the numbers #GHCC

Friday, May 20th, 2011 by
The Leschi Commute Station, on the west side of the I90 Bridge, saw 687 cyclists ride through, a 67% increase over last year.

We’ve discussed de-emphasizing the Bike to Work Day numbers since they’re not scientific, independently-verified or audited. We know that some people ride past multiple stations. But, we also know that some cyclists are never counted because they bike before or after the counts or they take a route that doesn’t pass a volunteer counter. In the end, maybe it’s a wash.

That said, just about everyone wants to know, “How many people biked to work and school today?”

Drumroll…

Our Bike to Work Day Commute Stations are reporting a preliminary total of 19,404 people (a 43% increase over the 13,568 counted in 2010), and Bike to School estimate is 3,300. That’s an estimated grand total of 22,704!

The University of Washington Commute Station at Rainier Vista was the busiest spot, with 1,769 cyclists passing through. The Fremont Bridge was close behind at 1,749. The Snohomish County station reported an impressive 1,029 cyclists, double what they saw last year.

If you’re a numbers junkie, you might also check out the stats on the Group Health Commute Challenge. The miles ridden and calories burned tick upward with just about every screen refresh.

Riders actively logging trips: 8,709 with 10,311 registered

Total teams: 1321

Total miles logged since May 1: 866,190

CO2 saved from the air (lb.): 848,866

Calories burned: 42,443,317

See you from 4 to 7 in Ballard for the Bike to Work Day After Party!
